RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
