As bewildering as it is to observe the leader seek toι’ θ¦ the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us β among senior generations almost a majority β who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

The Savior's reaction to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek β not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your outer garment you must offer them your pullover too.
The obvious and straightforward truth that Christ in biblical accounts advocates for a form of extreme compassion centered on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down β The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest Among Us
So I have been heartened to see the determined opposition regarding Trump develop in this past year. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
